The propitiatory practices of future events by Vera Mantero, 2018

Between 1966 and 1968 Ernesto de Sousa (1921-1988), Portuguese multidisciplinary artist, curator, teacher, filmmaker, researcher and art critic, very close to the Fluxus movement, received a grant from the Gulbenkian Foundation to undertake a photographic survey, at a national scale, of Portuguese folk sculpture. For this purpose he traveled from the north to the south of Portugal, photographing an extensive amount of works and interviewing artists, reflecting that he was not far from the interest other artists and thinkers of his generation had developed for “another art History” or even for “anti-art”.

Art historian Paula Pinto is working on this archive and addressed choreographer Vera Mantero in order to develop with her a performative presentation based on this material. For this project Mantero travelled through Portugal following some of the footsteps of De Sousa's original trip, in order to better understand the issues at stake in his archive's material and from there start a “research through body and action”.

“The Propitiatory Practices of Future Events”, is what Ernesto de Sousa would say he was looking for in folk art. One which has authors and not just transmitted forms, one which has formal solutions which move away from the repetition of patterns.
