Double Bind Quartet

a project by Vítor Rua with Carlos Zíngaro, Luís San Payo, Vera Mantero and Vítor Rua, 2006

Double Bind is a situation in which a person receives contradictory or different messages. This term was used by Gregory Bateson as an attempt to explain the cause of schizophrenia through a non-biological perspective.

Watzlawick usually gives as an example of double bind the case of a mother who offers two shirts to her son at Christmas. The next day the son wears one of the shirts offered by his mother and the mother asks him: “What about it son? Didn’t you like the other shirt?

The Double Bind Quartet by Carlos Zíngaro, Vítor Rua, Luís San Payo and Vera Mantero, (in Portalegre with Nuno Rebelo) creates in its music a sort of double bind between two distinct musical typologies: Improvisation and Rock Art.
