Alice Neel. Beautifully Imperfect Performance at the Museum, by Vera Mantero, 2026

The exhibition Alice Neel. Beautifully Imperfect, on display at the Serralves Museum between July 2026 and January 2027, offers an in-depth exploration of the American artist’s work, highlighting her rejection of normative ideals of beauty and her affirmation of imperfection as an aesthetic and political gesture. Housed in the Álvaro Siza Wing, the exhibition is organised in a non-linear manner, prioritising thematic encounters and a sensory experience of the space, in dialogue with the architecture.

In this context, choreographer Vera Mantero will stage a performance to activate the exhibition, to be held in the Siza Vieira Wing itself, where the exhibition is installed. The piece will be performed in collaboration with dancer Daniel Pizzamiglio, with visual design and costumes by Sara Leme. The performances will take place between 17 and 20 September 2027, offering a choreographic interpretation of Alice Neel’s universe and her ‘beautifully imperfect’ figures, extending the exhibition into the realms of the body, time and presence.
