Ladies and gentlemen, welcome, benvenuto and benvindes to the international show for everyone and for no one! Eine show für alle und für niemanden! We bring Nietzsche with buffoonish clowns, acrobatic tightrope walkers, laughter, lions, gases, colourful costumes, high heels, guests and
divertissements, whistles, odysseys in space, lions, invisible ropes, music and magic tricks! And we also bring a handful of nothing, nichts, nichts, Widerstandsfähigkeit and Zarathustra!
Human existence is bleak and remains meaningless: a clown may prove fatal to you
in Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra
We take Nietzsche’s concept of the “Übermensch” (Superman/Superwoman) as our starting point to reflect, on explore and question the limits and interpretations of our human condition, of what we are beyond gender, age, ethnicity or other distinguishing factors, at a time of accelerated transformation and transcendence of our existence.
This production brings together three groups: a theatre company (ASTA) and a dance company (BCN), both directed by Miguel Pereira, an associate artist of O Rumo do Fumo. We take Nietzsche’s concept of the “Übermensch” (Superman/Superwoman) as our starting point to reflect on, explore and question the limits and interpretations of our human condition, of who we are and what defines us, beyond gender, ethnicity or other distinguishing factors, at a time of rapid transformation and transcendence in our existence.
I teach you the superman. Man is something that must be overcome. What have you done to overcome him? What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not an end in himself: what can be loved in man is that he is a passage and a decline. I say to you: one must still have chaos within oneself to be able to give birth to a
dancing star; I say to you: you still have chaos within you. Man stands midway between the animal and the superman, and celebrates his path into the night as the highest hope; for it is the path to a new morning. Then he who declines will bless himself for being one who passes on to the other side; and the sun of his knowledge will remain at noon. All the gods are dead: now we want the superman to live.
